Best of Best Fleets Named

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Boyle Transportation and Nussbaum Transportation have been named overall winners of the 2020 Best Fleets to Drive For by the Truckload Carriers Association and CarriersEdge.

Boyle, of Billerica, Mass., was the winner in the Small Carrier Division. Nussbaum, of Hudson, Ill., was the winner in the Large Carrier Division. Nussbaum was the overall small carrier winner last year.

Both overall winners have been Best Fleets Top 20 finalists six years in a row. The categories are determined by the fleet size of the 20 finalists. Boyle has 133 drivers, Nussbaum 442.

Both winners have a driver satisfaction rating above 93 percent and driver turnover under 20 percent.

Jane Jazrawy, CEO and co-founder of CarriersEdge, said Boyle grabbed the evaluators’ attention from their first interview for its driver support programs and improvements in operational efficiency.

Guaranteed play, provision of cell phones and connectivity tools, and a generous scholarship offering all demonstrated a willingness to invest in areas many fleets are reluctant to explore, it said.

“Their unique and highly effective driver management philosophy raised the stands we use to evaluate participants,” she said. “In sort, they made the program harder for everybody else.”

Nussbaum, she said, “continues to surprise us with their innovation and deep focus on safety, driver development and overall workplace culture.”

It earned high marks for its approach to new technologies that focus on personal needs to optimize driver efficiency and a creative approach to HR and professional development.

Hiremaster client TLD Logistics Services of Knoxville, Tenn., was among the top 20 finalists for the fifth year in a row. It competed in the large carrier division.

In discussing TLD’s run of consistency with Wright Media last month, CarriersEdge co-founder Mark Murrell called the carrier noteworthy for its strong set of driver programs, high satisfaction and good numbers in safety and turnover.

“As an evaluator what always stands out to me is how organized they are in their preparation for the program,” he said. “Their questionnaire is immaculate, they’re well coordinated for the interview and they easily beat their target number of driver surveys well before the deadline.

“That may seem minor and inconsequential, but we learned a long time ago that we can tell a lot about the company just by watching how they approach the evaluation process. Being organized, having accurate numbers, ensuring that all the multipart questions are answered completely and several other related elements given us a good sense of how much the company has its act together.”

There were 113 fleets nominated by drivers in this year’s competition, 62 made it to the finals.
