DES MOINES, Iowa – David Isaac started at TMC Transportation on Valentine’s Day 2014 and has been in love with the Black and Chrome ever since.
The veteran TMC driver spent eight years in the military and transitioned into his job while still enlisted because, he said, TMC “was the only flatbed company that stood out to me, especially the company being employee-owned.”
After driving on his own for a year and a half, he caught the bug to teach and quickly moved into a role as a trainer.
“There are multiple ways to do one job,” he said, “but I wanted to make sure that the end result is what is required of our company standards.”
That approach has served him well and recently TMC named him Trainer of the Month for September.
Driver trainers are vital to the TMC training department and each month one is chosen who demonstrates the outstanding qualities TMC looks for in a trainer. The monthly winner is chosen based on their safety record and the safety performance of their trainees, the number of drivers trained and the retention percentage of those drivers.
TMC is the nation’s largest employee-owned flatbed transportation company, providing services and supply-chain management solutions throughout the 48 contiguous states. The company’s claim-free, on-time delivery record is consistently recognized by its customers.
When it comes to his training style, Isaac takes a supervising role, letting his trainees do as much as they can on their own but under his watchful eye. His favorite part of training is meeting other drivers and helping to be a part of their success.
“I feel like this is the best way for them to get a feel of what it will be like once they have their own truck,” he said. “It’s great to see new guys do well … You can learn even while you’re teaching, whether it be a load you wouldn’t normally or discovering a more efficient way to do things.”
