On average, over 700 deaths occur in work zones yearly. Truck and passenger vehicle drivers both need to be particularly careful while traveling through these zones.
1. Research your route
Utilize routing map apps like Waze and try to avoid work zones if at all possible. Do your part in cutting down on congestion.
2. Avoid All Distractions
Distracted driving is especially dangerous in work zones. There is often extra signage indicating reducing speeds and lane changes. These areas are also known for inducing sudden stops.
3. Margin of Safety
Rear-end crashes in these areas are common. Never cut off a truck or bus. Always maintain space between your vehicle & the one in front of you.
4. Merge Early
When approaching lane closures, move into the open lane as soon as possible. Be sure to pay close attention to vehicles around you that could be in your blind spot.
5. Protect Workers
All these tips are to protect you as well as others on the road; this includes road workers! Give them extra room and slow down as you approach them, as you should be prepared to stop if need be.
